Weirdly enough when I was growing up as a oversized-tee-wearing, long-haired grungey good boy, I always dreamed of being in a band called the Deadbeats. I bet there’s been like 20 or 30 bands with that name already though. This particular one have Uncle Acid at the helm and this LP is dedicated to rocking like it’s 1975. There’s quite a glam stomp to it, screaming guitar duets, ballsy vocals. Basically if you’re into stuff like Blue Cheer, Thin Lizzy, Slade and Free then this’ll put a huge great smile on your chops.
Of course it’s questionable why anybody bothers making records which so accurately copy the styles of decades past, but as far as this kind of revivalism goes this record puts other recent ‘70s-aping efforts in the shade; Howlin’ Rain ain’t a patch on these boys. There are moments that bring to mind Jet or Burning Brides, but in the context of such a cheesy rock-fest of a record that’s entirely acceptable in my book and there’s enough nasty garagey distortion, galloping grooves and crazy shredding to raise them high above such acts.
Apparently the first vinyl pressing, which only came out last year, is rare as rocking horse shit and commands ridiculous prices on eBay. Then again there’s not much music like this still being made and when it’s done this well what can you do but get stuck in?
