...according to our Phil on Wed 18 Jul, 2012.
You might not be familiar with this chap but he’s been kicking about for ages now as a 3D film director for folks like Hudson Mohawke, Mogwai, Martyn, Jamie Lidell, Kuedo and Lone. If that impressive CV doesn’t tickle your vag then he’s also done artwork with his graphical design hands for the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never, Rustie, King Midas Sound...and if that doesn’t grab you by the balls then he’s also toured with Mogwai as a disc jockey! So we’ve established he’s a terribly busy lad...
Somehow he’s managed to get an album together for Planet Mu in betwixt all of that. ‘Regional Surrealism’ is very much like an imaginary film score in the way the 14 tracks piece themselves together that is. Weird synth noises and alien ambient vibes are the order of the day with disturbed voice samples intersprinkled with some of the most delightfully nostalgic melodies I’ve heard in a while. It’s a largely beatless affair with only one track chucking a few beats at you. The rest of it is ambient strange bleepy electronics with retro synth sounds and a whole fistful of inventiveness. Future (retro) electronics courtesy of Planet Mu!
