Leeds’s Eagulls are hot shit at the moment. From what I’ve been hearing the launch show for this record totally went off, and the platter itself has king Hookworm MJ twiddling the knobs which is always a good sign! Basically what they’re doing that the kids are going so mad for is somewhere between mid-’90s post-grunge and Hot Snakes. The guitars are quite Hot Snakesy anyway - particularly on opener ‘Coffin’ - but the songs head down a more anthemic mid-paced route like fellow UK upstarts Mazes but mixed with the garagey fun-times of Southend’s Wobbly Lamps.
Whenever I’ve seen these guys live they’ve always made me feel really nostalgic for the golden days of the mid-’90s when everybody was in a pop band. Everything’s delivered with gleeful abandon and they’re really endearingly snotty about it. It’s a sunny garage-grunge aesthetic that seems custom made for hot, hazy summer days. If you’re nostalgic for bands like Jawbreaker or The Wipers these guys just might scratch that itch.
