The Doppler effect is when you perceive a change of pitch in a sound as you move relative to the object producing the sound, since the waveforms are shortened when it’s moving towards you and elongated as it moves away. I’m experiencing an entirely different Doppler effect today as this tasty bit of kosmische krautronica from the astonishingly consistent El Paraiso imprint massages my ears for the first time. Apparently this lad Jakob Skott is a very talented and busy man, not only responsible for this record but also the drummer in stoner rock labelmates Causa Sui and the designing mind behind the beautiful El Paraiso covers - one of my favourite label-specific aesthetics around right now.
It’s quite minimal, having been made by a man with a couple of synthesisers and some effects (one of the synths being the legendary Prophet 600 - famously the first polyphonic synth to implement the midi-synchronisation signal). What results is gently pulsating, shimmering, concordant drifts and whooshes and bubbling, twinkling melodies for an uncrowded, therapeutic listen with enough detail to keep you entertained for many listens to come. The nu-vintage synth revolution continues apace and spits out another quality disc. If you’re into Spectrum Spools stuff or Kosmonaut or the recent El Paraiso one from Jonas Munk then this’ll probably turn you on too.
