Ooh, a new Akatombo album. I liked his last one. In case you didn’t know (and I suspect you don’t) he’s a Scottish dude living in Japan. It’s a small world you know and there’s people from everywhere literally everywhere. It’s a wonder I sleep at night.
Mr Paul Kirk (his real name) makes music “on the recurrent, underlying theme of urban and cultural alienation in a media-connected, (controlled?), Japanese metropolitan environment”. I had to quote that cos I couldn’t have phrased it better. You can really hear the urban influence in the music...it’s like listening to a soundtrack to a film of underground Tokyo at night.
Techno, bass music, hip-hop and industrial music creates an often brooding listen which builds up very nicely and rather intensely. It’s both engaging and pumping. It’s a while since I’ve used the word pumping in a review but this definitely pumps hard whilst being dark and apocalyptic. Initial copies come with a bonus DVD with stuff on...
