What year is this? I ask because I have in my hands a new single from The June Brides. For a band who split up in 1986 they sound remarkably youthful and untouched by the passing years. For the uninitiated The June Brides were a mid ‘80s jangle pop group who attained a degree of success in their day, touring with The Smiths, even having a tribute album in their honour.
‘January Moon’ is a lovely pastoral slice of rural indie pop with jangly guitars, understated vocals and...yup...the trumpet is there meshing with some strident strings. It makes me all warm inside hearing this, I can just imagine them as young men, lolloping to the pub for a pint of nut brown ale before squeezing into a Datsun Cherry for a day in the studio, no worries about the internet, keeping their twitter updated, etc, the exciting thud of the mail arriving in the morning, another postal order coming through for their 7” record...I’m getting all moist eyed.
The A side sounds like one of Teenage Fanclub’s more mellow moments, side B starts off like a Lloyd Cole number before rising to a chorus that has a bit of TV Personalities about it. Charming.
