  • Hip hop pioneer El-P returns with ‘Cancer4Cure’, his first full solo album in five years.

  • The album features Interpol’s Paul Banks, Outkast associate and Atlanta native Killer Mike, Nick Diamond of Canadian indie band Islands, and eccentric rappers Mr Muthaf*ckin’ eXquire and Danny Brown.

  • Musically, the record takes another leap forward from El-P’s 2010 instrumental workout ‘Weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixxx3’, deploying menacing synths, fist-pumping beats, bottomless bass, live instrumentation and ear- worming melody, and generally setting the standard for hip hop production higher than ever.

  • His previous two solo albums - 2002’s ‘Fantastic Damage’ and 2007’s ‘I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead’ - were both critically acclaimed and widely loved.

I’m the same age as EL-P... which is completely irrelevant and in no way related to this review. Now that we’ve established that, I’ll tell you what I think of his new record. Well, it’s pretty amazing, to be honest. All the elements are here which make up the typical EL-P experience – the paranoic-sci-fi-philip-k-dickensian-dystopic-ultra-angry-politically- charged-blitzkrieg of fantastically constructed raps with forward thinking production. I think this guy really gives a shit about what he does and I think this comes through in what he produces – it’s all top notch stuff – never half baked. For me, EL-P is a pioneer and a stalwart of true Hip Hop and this album definitely builds upon his existing trademarks whilst daring to be a little bit different. It’s taken me roughly half a dozen listens for it to bed down in my mind, but now that it has, I feel confident that it’s his best yet. Well worth a look if you’re a veteran and if you’re new to the genre. Top marks.

So, what do you think?
