Hip hop pioneer El-P returns with ‘Cancer4Cure’, his first full solo album in five years.
The album features Interpol’s Paul Banks, Outkast associate and Atlanta native Killer Mike, Nick Diamond of Canadian indie band Islands, and eccentric rappers Mr Muthaf*ckin’ eXquire and Danny Brown.
Musically, the record takes another leap forward from El-P’s 2010 instrumental workout ‘Weareallgoingtoburninhellmeggamixxx3’, deploying menacing synths, fist-pumping beats, bottomless bass, live instrumentation and ear- worming melody, and generally setting the standard for hip hop production higher than ever.
His previous two solo albums - 2002’s ‘Fantastic Damage’ and 2007’s ‘I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead’ - were both critically acclaimed and widely loved.

I’m the same age as EL-P... which is completely irrelevant and in no way related to this review. Now that we’ve established that, I’ll tell you what I think of his new record. Well, it’s pretty amazing, to be honest. All the elements are here which make up the typical EL-P experience – the paranoic-sci-fi-philip-k-dickensian-dystopic-ultra-angry-politically- charged-blitzkrieg of fantastically constructed raps with forward thinking production. I think this guy really gives a shit about what he does and I think this comes through in what he produces – it’s all top notch stuff – never half baked. For me, EL-P is a pioneer and a stalwart of true Hip Hop and this album definitely builds upon his existing trademarks whilst daring to be a little bit different. It’s taken me roughly half a dozen listens for it to bed down in my mind, but now that it has, I feel confident that it’s his best yet. Well worth a look if you’re a veteran and if you’re new to the genre. Top marks.
