Where did it all go wrong for the woolly hatted one? I'd like to pinpoint the exact moment as being either the lead single from 'Have you Fed the Fish', 'You Were Right' -one idea so smugly overdone you wanted to slap him around the hat repeatedly with said fish or when he sang with Jools Holland's big band. From then on its been diminishing returns, middling albums and ill tempered aggressive public appearances,. Anyway his previous effort 'Its What I'm Thinking' had a couple of lovely efforts which reminded you of the songwriter who charmed the nation with his earlier work. Now he's back with the soundtrack to a new film 'Being Flynn' which I'm presuming is hoped will do an 'About the Boy' for him. The material is pleasant but forgettable. He still has a way with a melody though, 'Last Day' is a gorgeously melodic piano instrumental recalling Elton Johns delightful 'Song for Guy'. The guitar/vocal tracks are less impressive, generally being forgettable re-treads of earlier work or strange MOR workouts like 'Harbor Street Check In' that beneath the sax mahem do have a special melodic agility to them. The more orchestral/piano pieces here are quite lovely and maybe this is the direction he should plod on in. Still, the film is meant to be a blockbuster so the royalties should keep him in woolly hats for awhile.
