Diva Dompe has been a busy lady in recent years, with the former Pocahaunted bassist now busying herself with solo records, but before Pocahaunted she and sister Lola (both progeny of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins, fact fans) were in a wonky little experimental indie band called Blackblack with a certain Alex Greenwald, who went on to earn many monies in his next band Phantom Planet. On this LP is a selection of playful, wistful, brittle post-punk numbers with warm melodies and a naive delivery that's very charming. There's a plodding slacker cover of 'Skulls' by the Misfits among the highlights, and Diva's childlike vocal delivery (I think she and Lola may actually have been children when this was made, judging by the photo on the back of the sleeve) is really affecting and likeable. The tones are reminding me a little of Woods, actually, with that melodic summery lo-fi charm being constantly evident, but there's more of a punky simplicity to the compositions, and a nice interplay between the slinky grooves and stumbling delivery. Totally likeable indie pop with just the right amount of Deerhoof-esque weirdness for wonky summer good times.
