I can’t decide on SBTRKT. He seems a nice enough lad and some of his instrumentals are pretty decent but he has that James Blake style of singing (though admittedly not half as annoying). Opener ‘Hold On’ is a nice enough slice of electronic music with Radio 6 daytime playlist vocals on top but I’m preferring ‘Ride to Freedom’ which marries skittery beats to a warm melody.
It’s all very safe and neat and tidy - nothing to get you excited about but also nothing to get you wanting to rip the stereo from its moorings. The electronica equivalent of Gareth Barry. On the flip we get a remix by SiSi BakBak which apparently someone (ie Phil who has probably been told by the distributor who wants to shift some units) thinks is Thom Yorke. Thom or not it’s an average reworking with some sub bass and eerie vocals plonked on top. Amazing sleeve though - it’s one of those hologram type things.
