Another week and another Shangaan release arrives at our door - we're lucky lads here at Normans. Now, I bought and thoroughly enjoyed the Shangaan Electro compilation but when it comes to identifying the source material on these remix EPs I'm at a complete loss. I guess they've all been fairly heavy on deconstruction so I probably shouldn't worry about it - they work just fine as stand-alone pieces. This time round it's Demdike Stare and Hype Williams doing the do so it's no doubt gonna be one of the more popular ones...Demdike Stare pay no attention to the blistering pace that comes as Shangaan standard and brings these jamz back into the realm of your typical chill out tempo. The opener deconstructs and fattens out those marimba-esque tones and crafts a new groove from all the bits. This is followed by an immensely spaced out cluster of vocal loops and ghostly synths that sound like they've been treated to a little time-stretching. Flip it and Hype Williams take charge. It seems like it's been a while since the duo employed live beats so that's immediately refreshing. Couple that with Inga's now fully developed vocal style and you've got another winning jam. It's loose, lo-fi and all the better for it. The second track is a dub of the first and breaks that groove down in the minimalist way you'd expect from a dub. Lots of bass, lots of echo, scattered drum intervals...you know the drill. Really like Dean's brief time-stretched vocal harmony - they should do that more often. Another great 12” from Honest Jons.
