Mdou Moctar - Tahoutine/ Tahoutine (Gulls remix)

Tahoutine/ Tahoutine (Gulls remix) by Mdou Moctar

This is odd. Mdou Moctar is a Nigerian singer, guitarist who had a local hit with this autotune addled tune. The dude from Sachel Sounds was over there, heard it brought it back with a load of other tunes which are compiled on this weeks 'Music from Saharan Cellphones'  compilation (see glowing review elsewhere). This, however, is out on 7” with a futuristic beat driven Gulls remix. If you want a pint sized taste of the album then this would be highly recommended. Its an excellent, hugely original form of music that is at one traditional and very forward thinking, a nagging melody but subtle and evocative

Mdou Moctar is a songwriter and guitarist living in Niger. His Tuareg autotune anthem ‘Tahoultine’ first appeared in the mp3 markets of West Africa sometime around 2009. In 2010 Chris Kirkley of sahelsounds.com discovered this tune bumping from the speaker of a cellphone in Kidal, Mali.

Upon returning home, in 2010, Chris compiled it along with a handful of others he had gathered via cellphone memory cards during his travels in Mali and Mauritania, and released ‘Music From Saharan Cellphones’ on cassette via Mississippi Records. Following that, Boomarm Nation countered with ‘Music FOR Saharan Cellphones : The International Reworks’, which was a series of remixes and reversions of the amazing original music released as a free download with the express aim of being returned to those same West African bazaars.

The Gulls bass heavy futuristic versioning mix of the haunting ‘Tahoultine’ proved to be such a hit that it’s now being made available on this very limited 7-inch. 500 copies only.
