...according to our Clinton on Fri 02 Mar, 2012.
Well Brian has gone and forgotten to take this home and review it so sorry Demdike Stare and Modern Love people, you are stuck with second choice Clint. There seems to have been a lot of fuss made about these lot of late and Pitchfork have even got on the bandwagon so we'd better sit up and take note. Although sonically impressive, its difficult to ascertain from the first few tracks what the fuss is about and whether it would appeal to anyone past your industrial clanking fetishists (hello Anthony). There's no standard beats to speak of, the nearest it comes to something rhythmic is the kind of factory machine rumblings of 'Kommunion' which kind of build up the type of industrial noises that came from Sheffield forges in the days of the steel industry. Elsewhere 'Unction' begins with a dripping tap, didgeridoo combination before building up layers of strange effects and finally, finally something resembling a dark synth melody sits way, way beneath the clattering's. Extremely evocative and atmospheric stuff marrying The Caretaker ambience to the noises of heavy machinery. 'Mnemosyne' changes tack completely with a relatively upbeat bouncy melody on top of the distinctive percussion and some kind of zither effect. After that its back to the deep dark wastelands of 'Shade' which is the most haunting track here, comprising of gorgeously eerie drones akin to your early Aphex ambience.
* It's been almost a year since Demdike Stare finished their "Tryptych" of releases:
- Pitchfork 8.3 review: Tryptych's collapsing of background and foreground is a holistic approach that makes their unexpected connections-- between the black ambience of Nurse With Wound, Middle Eastern chant, and minimal techno-- sound seamless and logical. The result is a style part-techno, part-drone, part-noise, sometimes European-sounding, sometimes ambiguously "ethnic," part-heavenly, part-hellish-- a kind of map to a musical otherworld.”
* In the intervening months Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty have been busy touring and gradually piecing together sounds for this new series: Elemental.
* After four limited edition vinyl installments, Elemental is now released as a 2CD album, including different versions of tracks that have appeared on the vinyl editions, plus extensive additional material - making for a two-hour trip through dark, post-industrial terrain.
* Mastered by Lupo at D&M, this 2CD edition comes packaged in a deluxe / oversized 6 page Digifile featuring artwork by Andy Votel.
* Demdike Stare have a busy touring schedule for 2012, including several appearances for the ATP festival in different locations, and a tour of the States later on in the year.
