OH! It's Juan Atkins!!! S-weet. Do I even need to review this? 'Control' is a classic slice of Juan Atkins goodness with his trademark dirty Detroit electro house sounding as fresh as the day he and his buddies conceived the sound way back in the day. 'Control' is bumping! It possesses a super crisp beat, minimalist use of pads, some straight funky house bass-line action and a near-perfect vocoder robot vocal. It's a slap in the face reminder of how good dance music can be when it's not crying on about something or trying to re-invent itself in a plethora of different ways to compensate for a lack of ideas. Amazing track. Flip it and 'The Messenger' is a lighter almost afro-influenced affair with a marimba-esque melody taking the lead. The beats are almost unfeasibly well programmed with a looser, improvised feel to synth melodies gives it an almost live jam feel. Totally made my morning this. Absolute classic stuff from a true master
Juan Atkins returns to R&S on a Model 500 solo mission. The last Model 500 single enlisted the help of the live line up that includes Detroit techno royalty Mike Banks and UR alumni Mark Taylor, but this latest release is just Juan in the studio and back at his best. ‘Control’ is vintage Model 500, the classic electro that Atkins pretty much invented, with his treated vocals riding over the crisp rhythm programming, dark basslines and Detroit synths. ‘The Messenger’ on the flip is a moodier affair, with the liquid synths almost running away with themselves over the rough beats. Model 500 and R&S has proved to have been a classic combination over the years and this release is one to file next to the classics.
A – Control
B – The Messenger
