The Minimal Wave Tapes Volume 2 by Various Artists

5...according to our on Wed 22 Feb, 2012.

Anyone who heard the first volume of 'The Minimal Wave Tapes' series compiled by New Yorker Veronica Vasicka (Minimal Wave) and Stones Throw mainman Peanut Butter Wolf will no doubt be clambering to get at this second volume. For those of you who missed the boat first time round, this is a collection of rare, mostly home-produced, self-released underground DIY electronic music from the US and Europe dating from the late '70s into the early '80s. These are rare gems by neglected artists that deserve a second listen. And what a glorious second listen it is. The only obvious name here is Felix Kubin who is generally known for a quirkier take on minimalist electronic music but here treats us to one of his earliest forays into the style. Elsewhere we see the second volume move away from the purest Cold Wave minimalism of the first volume and taking its first tentative steps into the synth-pop era. Loads of awesome tracks here with the standout being the opener 'Dirty' by Hard Corps. An essential listen for any discerning electronic music fan.

Minimal Wave: underground DIY electronic music from North America and Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Characterized by ‘70s synth and drum machine production and home recording, most of these tracks were privately released on limited-edition cassettes or vinyl and have been known only to a handful of people over the years. New Yorker Veronica Vasicka has spent the past five years painstakingly building the Minimal Wave catalogue, and a label of the same name that specializes in digging up and reissuing the music. In partnership here with Stones Throw, the recordings have been officially licensed, remastered from their analogue source tapes and compiled here for a second volume of this top-selling anthology by Vasicka and Stones Throw mainman Peanut Butter Wolf.
