Nirvana Covers - Aneurysm / Endless Nameless by Male Bonding / EMA

Gotta love the vintage Sub Pop-style artwork on this one. Great touch. On Male Bonding's version of 'Aneurism' (recorded by “Rory Bratwell”, lolz) they've simplified the guitar lines and fuzzed everything up, with drifty low-in-the-mix vocals lending it a bit of a shoegaze feel, especially in the verses. There's some extra vocal stuff going on towards the end, too. It might not be as good as the original but at least they're not attempting a carbon copy of it. Flip it and EMA's doing a five-minute-plus live take on 'Endless Nameless', opening with a build-up of insistent drums and overdriven guitar, soon to be joined by some shouty vocals and squalling feedback. There's something genuinely unhinged about this barely-recognisable cover that's quite alluring. It's so loosely-structured and obnoxious that it's very hard not to take a shine to it. These are both interesting reinventions, and will no doubt help prevent the Nirvanas from eventually drifting into long-forgotten obscurity. Props to these guys for keeping this underappreciated music alive.

Limited to 500 copies. We at For Us Records love fun and we love cover versions. we had a quick whip round to get enough money to send sub pop's male bonding into rory attwell's studio in dalston for a day to record nirvana's 'aneurysm'. then we stole souterrain transmissions and south dakota native ema's standout cover of 'endless nameless' from spin magazines 'nevermind' covers download album to release this 500 copies only 7". the shop lived through the grunge era first time around and it's great it's back again. this single is released in association with sub pop and comes with a sub pop style spoof sleeve and label.
