Rad Times Xpress IV by Black Bananas

Okay, this is a great record to be ending the day with. Jennifer Herrema's new band Black Bananas have dropped their debut on Drag City. On here we've got indie rock's original queen of cool showing the kids what's up with a crazy technicolour mix of '80s power pop, funk and psych-rock. Her nonchalant delivery splatters class over everything and there's shameless wah abuse. There are places that bring to mind Billy Idol, other places are reminding me of Supertramp, sometimes Weird War, one song even sounds like Salt 'n' Pepa with fuzz guitar...and now it's reminding me of a more funky Tears for Fears. I don't know what's going on but these party vibes are sweeeeet. These guys and girls are having fun, knocking out killer hook after killer hook with casual exuberance. I was expecting something good, but this has blown away all my expectations. The most fun you'll have with your clothes on this month. I'm taking this home with me to further get my head around the brilliance.

•    ‘Rad Times Xpress IV’ is the first album by new band Black Bananas. Black Bananas features internationally feared rock vocalist Jennifer Herrema (RTX, Royal Trux).

•    Jennifer is a sought-after presence, collaborating with rock ‘n’ rollers Kurt Vile and St. Vitus frontman Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich, fashionistas Pamela Love, Hysteric Glamor, Volcom, and visual / contextual artists Justin Lowe and Jonah Freeman.

•    Black Bananas’ first album ‘Rad Times Xpress IV’ runs the gamut from gnarly odes to reality TV in songs like ‘My House’ to future electric metallic GoGo sounds, all conceived with scraps of influence from Jennifer’s childhood passions zig- zagged with other currents out there, creating a sound that will take you to a specific place that only Black Bananas know how to find.
