Strange Weekend by Porcelain Raft

Porcelain Raft is the work of Mauro Remiddi, a native of Rome, Italy who has relocated a number of times before settling in New York where I'm assuming this record was made. 'Strange Weekend' is one of those very contemporary sounding records sitting somewhere between the blissful indie pop of Beach House or Real Estate and the sample based dance pop (Glo-fi, Witch-House, whatever) of Washed Out and Memory  Tapes. I guess when you strip it back Remiddi is a very traditional sounding singer-songwriter who makes excellent use of modern technology to augment her compositions. Ghostly echo, distant reverb's, subtle synth pads and soft percussion guide Remiddi's brittle ballads to otherworldly places. The result is a truly luxurious pop experience.

• Debut album on Secretly Canadian for widely respected Italian / London artist now relocated to New York.

• Mauro Remiddi’s androgynous vapour of a voice weaves like a ghost between Nick Gilder and The Alessi Brothers, Julee Cruise and Judee Sill. In more contemporary terms, Porcelain Raft stands confidently on a high hill between the sounds of M83 and Beach House.
