Diagrams is the brainchild of ex Tunng and The Accidental chappie Sam Genders. It's quite a departure from the former projects of this leftfield songsmith.. His voice is still as strong (yet sometimes fragile) as it was when he was laying electronic folk hits upon ya, but gone is the more traditional instrumentation. He now has more weapons than that in his musical arsenal. Not that he's a one-trick pony, or anything. This newie from Genders has a rather eclectic ,drifting feel. It has some great ambient moments, that segue into pop structures and even dabbles in funk (check out the basslines in the track “Antelope” or heavy synth rock in the awesome track “Tall Buldings”). This track is really good, and it's no surprise that this cut has single written all over its tiny face. The rest of this LP is also interesting and varied. I was also rather taken with he production, warm and fuzzy one minute and cold as an uncaring ex-lover the next.. I reckon I reckon the song “Night All Night” is my favourite. It has a really good feel and vibe. This LP is limited to 500 earth copies and if you are a fan of Genders, or an uninitiated old sow like myself, you could do worse things than let this LP into your ears...
• Debut album from London’s Diagrams, the brainchild of Sam Genders (ex-Tunng, The Accidental).
• Genders’ voice is immediately recognisable from his previous incarnations. Here, however, his warm vocal timbre is accompanied by electronic pop (such as in the title track), synth riffs and funk- laden basslines (as in ‘Antelope’ and first single ‘Tall Buildings’).
• Available on limited edition (500 copies for the UK) heavyweight vinyl (including download code), CD and download, ‘Black Light’ features artwork by Dalston-based artist Chrissie Abbott (Little Boots, Patrick Wolf).
