Sunburned Hand have long been a favourite of mine since I caught an early show of theirs at the Brudenell Social Club years back, and on this tape here they're releasing some recordings from UK dates all the way back in 2006. You might well be familiar with their MO by now - they're a loose collective of psychedelic freak-folk improvisers with a real sense of joy about their chunterings. I kind of see them as occupying the middle ground between the cerebral skitter of NNCK and the unhinged abandon of Raccoo-oo-oon, with primitive chugging grooves emerging from a swamp of squeaks and bangs. There's a point on here between the two tracks on the first side where one of them gets up on the mic and starts ranting like a southern preacher which is kind of cool and emphasises the almost spiritual sense of communion that the band seem to embody. To me their music always seems like a real celebration of just getting together with people you like and making the music that you feel like making at the time, always changing, always working to improve, but with the approach that everything you do is worthy on its own terms as a finished product. Naturally this means that these guys have put out so many CDr releases that it's basically impossible to keep on top of them all, but I reckon this tape's one of my favourite things I've heard from them in terms of capturing their acid-fried aesthetic. There's some great windswept psych guitar in places that I'm totally enjoying and the four tracks here go on for a decent length of time. The hand-printed cloth bags they come in are pretty damn cute, too.
