Our single of the week (16th December 2011)
...according to our Mike on Wed 14 Dec, 2011.
This EP of remixes from indie-dance's current best hopes comes packaged with a totally amazing looking embroidered patch which I shall attempt to describe. It's got a lion's face with a crown on top and wings coming out of the sides, and “BASS HIGHRIDER / BADNESS / RADNESS” around the edge in green and “PEAKING LIGHTS” at the bottom in red. This is capable of turning the most drab jacket or bag into an unspeakably hot nerd accessory. The record itself kicks off with an Adrian Sherwood/On-U Sound laid back dub mix of Tiger Eyes that's totally chilling, before Dam-Funk puts his oar in with a mega classy bouncier mix of All The Sun That Shines. Flip it and you've got a Main Attrakionz mix of Marshmellow Yellow/Amazing and Wonderful produced by Squadda B which has a guy spitting rhymes all over the shop to provide what is probably the most thorough reinvention of the EP. Then to close we've got Patten's dystopian deconstruction of Hey Sparrow with its chopped up, stuttering groove failing to obscure the brightness of the original melody. The star of the show here's the patch though. Get one on your clothes, dude.
• Special limited edition of 800 copies worldwide. Each 12” comes with a 90mm diameter woven patch.
• West Coast dub-pop husband and wife duo Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis, AKA Peaking Lights, made their debut on Weird World with the domestic release of this year’s highly acclaimed ‘936’ (following on from an import release from the original US label Not Not Fun). A hauntingly beautiful, intensely immersive record that merges elements of dub, psych, minimal house, disco and Krautrock with a distinct pop sensibility, ‘936’ was a fiercely unique, exciting work and a great window into a wonderfully close, creative and prolific songwriting partnership.
• Weird World celebrate the release with a very special and very limited edition remix 12” which comes complete with remixes from Dam Funk, Patten, Main Attrakionz and Adrian Sherwood.
