Coki - Don’t Get It Twisted

Well I must confess I've been more of a Mala head in recent times, regular readers may well be aware of my continued fixation with these spiritual godfathers of dubstep, the Diggystyle Biscuits. Coki is the one who carefully watches all these kids go insane on the grubby sticky floors of dingy cellars and scary out-of-town clubs to music that hits you in the abdomen, solar plexus and throat with a mid-range wobble that teeters on the infuriating whilst retaining just enough momentum and energy to enable yourself to stumble around laughing like a lunatic. Depends maybe on how many disco nibbles you've had? Apparently this music sounds awesome on ketamine. Even gets the horses cyber-stomping on the floor like four legged equine robots! The other guys and gals in the office equate this record with going to the dentist but they're missing A/ the whole point of it and B/ how much scintillating detail and vibrant force there is lingering beneath the gut-busting wall-rattling madness displayed in spades throughout the first disc here. Nothing is as silly or annoying as 'Spongebob' here to my knowledge, there's tons more ideas on this EP. In a yin/yang twist, the subsequent record features black text on a white label, and features one of Coki's more roots-inclined productions. 'Celestial Dub' absolutely slays you with a gorgeous Jamaican skank married to some fabulous metallic dub ricochets and a really sumptuous spiritual bassline. One of his very finest excursions into this territory! 'Think You're Gone' is another tough playful roller with a familiar Roobarb & Custard vibe to the playful mid-range but executed in a much less explicit fashion, it will also totally punish any system it appears on. I found 'Urban Ethics' a little chucked together for my liking to be honest but this double pack features four undeniably powerful excursions that hit you hard in many satisfying ways, probably one of the stronger releases in the revered DMZ cannon.
