Steinvord is a mystery, even to Rephlex who release his records. No-one knows his name, where he comes from or how exactly he makes his tracks. Reckon it's safe to say from this debut 12” that he's rocking the old laptop as the tracks are immensely complex as with the majority of Rephlex artists. The mix-up is kinda interesting as this self-titled EP begins with an almost musique concrete-style sound sculpture piece before going bonkers with the old Break-Beat/Drum & Bass loops. It's like a vampire party at an art gallery - with Blade slicing up blood sucking party animals all around yer as you dance - crazy monkey style. It's cool the way these classic style Rephlex cuts (scattered junglist beats, Techno stabs sped up to daft speeds, dubby bass-lines...that sort of thing) are interspersed with more reflective experimental sound art moments. Though I'm not entirely convinced they make a happy marriage it's certainly a break from the norm. If you love your old skool R&S/Aphex/Rephlex/Ceephax Acid Crew/Squarepusher type shenanigans then this is certainly worth a listen as there ain't too many new artists mining the territory nowadays.
Rephlex knows virtually nothing about this artist. We discovered him via internet forum rumours a couple of years ago. All our communication has been very sporadic and unusual. We know his name but are not allowed to disclose it. All we can say about his location is Europe. We think he probably makes music using a computer but we’re not sure. We don’t think he’s released anything before. But the kids love it! & so do we. One might say that it has elements of electroacoustic sound sculpture colliding with fierce drum and bass rhythms but this wouldn’t really be describing it too well. It’s atmospheric future music, available on retro vinyl only for the foreseeable. But more work is expected in 2012.
