The Lovely Eggs - Allergies

Allergies by The Lovely Eggs

3...according to our on Wed 30 Nov, 2011.

I struggle with The Lovely Eggs. Everyone seems to like them in the office but I've played with this lot and they were totally underwhelming (and slightly unnerving) as a live act. On record I guess their style translates better and with a well produced single (overseen by SFA mainman Gruff Rhys) like this it's hard not to see the charm of a band that basically write about whatever they want and have no objection to sounding like Lush's lo-fi demented cousins. Big muff dominates these odes to 'Allergies' and the 'Slug Graveyard' and the thicker, punkier sound totally suits the group. An excellent final installment to a year of great Too Pure singles club releases.

•    It’s been a storming year for the Too Pure Singles Club. They’ve released another 12 cracking singles in the course of 12 months and it’s been a roller coaster and a half. What with the likes of Seize The Chair, DZ Deathrays, Crushed Beaks and Masters In France gracing the label. To see the year out they’re proud to offer a Christmas gift to the music world, announce their final release this year from The Lovely Eggs.

•    Northern punk rock duo The Lovely Eggs, comprised of Holly Ross (vocals / guitar / wife) and David Blackwell (drums / vocals / husband) began life in Paris in 2006 with the intention of writing and performing music ‘with no rules’.

• The Lovely Eggs deliver a powerful, stripped back sound comprised of drums and guitar, driven by vintage amps and Big Muff distortion. Then couple this with their engaging, often surreal lyrical slant to produce the infectious sound that has resulted in them working with Jad Fair and, more recently, Gruff Rhys, who produced ‘Allergies’ for the Too Pure single.

• ‘Allergies’ encapsulates everything that is wonderful about The Lovely Eggs. Raw guitar, clattering drums coupled with lyrics that can only be described as bonkers. It’s an honest, pretention free blast of everything that makes music great.

•    For The Lovely Eggs being in a band is a way of life. True to this, they live the way they play, so throw caution to the wind, give austerity the finger, and rock out like mad to The Lovely Eggs.
