Despite being a hairy get I've always managed to avoid having hairy hands [...or a hairy head! - Mike]. Do hairy palms count? Well here's the first release we've stocked by Hairy Hands which is a whopping 15 track long. It's an unusual listen as well. I'm only 3 tracks in and after a track of strange toytown hip-hop it's turned into some strange lo-fi noodlings. As soon as we've lunched on noodles it shifts into some strange funk rock styles...It's all done super playful like with strange noises popping up out of nowhere and a general shambling feel to the proceedings. Thus it's oozing with a certain wonky charm which I find endearing. There's plenty of loose sounding beats around as well making it sound like it's tripping over itself. Charming funnery which at times is a bit like a bedroom Dam Funk and other times a bit like early Four Tet or something. Whatever it sounds like I can't quite put my finger on it but it's an interesting one for sure!
Sometimes, a musician has to suppress some of his or her particular tastes for the
benefit of a project. In developing the sound of Mr James Bright, production is often
taken care of by James' close friends at studios all across the globe. Over the years,
however, James' urge to unleash his own monster sound had grown, and after a year
in the making, his own sound is ready to be let out of the cage.
This is HAIRY HANDS. Fluid rhythms and lavish keys are strewn together to
create a blend of beats and wonky folk that is particularly difficult to label. Tracks
bounce between chorus and verse, dropping and twisting every few bars; this music is
undeniably vibrant. A childlike approach to production, with everything and anything
sprinkled from start to finish, causes the finished product to sound beautifully naive.
There are no limits here, each track will get you in a headlock and re-arrange your
perception of groove. Goodbye Mr.Music Snob, Hairy Hands has just turned your
world upside down…
