James Spankie - EP 2

EP 2 by James Spankie

3...according to our on Tue 24 Jan, 2012.

The A side track on this, Anchor, is lovely. A plodding and emotional minimal pop song that manages to do the epic indie thing without coming off too Coldplay. On the flip he sails dangerously close to Martin & Co territory too, opening with a piano-led number which is thankfully too fragile and haunting for any prolonged comparisons Britain's smuggest indie titans to hold water. This is downbeat, soulful indie rock with quite organic tones...like you can hear the room the piano was recorded in. Oh, now some violins have joined in. This is from the Tindersticks school of soul-crushingly downbeat indie rock and it's executed beautifully, but it's not exactly anything new. Still, he's got a lovely voice (like Jeff Buckley meets that guy from Razorlight?) and some very pretty songs. Little bit overwrought in places for my taste, but if you like that melodramatic and highly emotional but still tasteful indie sound then you might be into this.

EP 2 is the first full release by James Spankie.James is a multi-instrumentalist singer, writer and producer who plays everything on record himself, similar to artists such as Tom Vek. But his work on Violin and Cello, his large cinematic arrangements and some heavy driving rhythms makes him resemble something more like a one-man Arcade Fire. As well as producing his own music, James has also composed soundtracks, most notably; spoken word piece ‘Electricity’ with The Kills’ Alison Mosshart.‘2’ is the follow up to a self-released debut EP, which caught the attention of School of Seven Bells who asked him to support them during their ‘Alpinisms’ promotion and Huw Stephens - who has given him airtime on Radio 1 as well as hosting him at The Social in London, and at Latitude Festival which he played with a full band including 2 drummers and a string ensemble.‘2’ will be available on White 7” and the usual digital outlets from the 5th December
