Liz Green - O, Devotion!

...From the producers of 'Driving Over Miss Daisy' and the director of 'Don't Look At Me (I'm A Shrew)' comes 'O, Devotion' which critics are saying is “a classic..shame its not a film.” (New York Times) and “I didn't like it...it's too violent” (Tim Robbins)...sorry about that, wrong meeting. This LP (by Liz Green) is a glorious, homespun style folk oddity. I am quite taken with her voice, which sounds like the love child of folk heroes gone by. Her delivery and lyrics are spot on too, and her guitar picking style is a joy to listen to. I heard the single from this LP (the fantastic “Displacement Song”) and looked forward to hearing this which is her debut album. It's a pretty strong collection of songs and when listening to it it almost transports you to the Deep South (not Croydon...but the Mississippi delta you arse!!). She's from the Wirral but sounds like she could stand toe to toe with types like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. She's pretttayyy pretttayyy good. The production has been capably engineered by Liam Watson at the legendary Toe Rag Studios, and it sounds great, almost like music from another time. This LP is one for fans of grassroots jazz, slightly muddy blues and homespun folk. An intriguing LP from an intriguing femme...
