As far as I can gather from the press release Thelma is some kind of imaginary/metaphorical retreat from the rigors of day to day life, and where better to enjoy an album of totally relaxing and textured melodic drone than there, I suppose. On this six-part LP, Pioulard rubs us all over with his warm cushions of guitar, harmonium, voice, magnetic tape, bowed bells, cello, warnophone and music box. It makes for an isolating but meditative and therapeutic listen, and the different varieties of warmth he finds are most beguiling. The whole record doesn't stray far from this warm melodic drone territory but this guy does it better than most. I've no doubt that fans of Celer and Grouper and Stars of the Lid and the like'll be well charmed by this.
