What is it with this crazed Swedish band? They're well deranged like a voodoo Gothic tribal breakdown I reckon. Vocally they're like the demented hybrid of Mike Patton, Current 93, The Birthday Party, PIL & Scratch Acid and the music isn't much more normal, weighing in somewhere between Swans & Faust on side one's astonishing centrepiece 'Beyond Within'. This particular track is forged from stunningly unsettling ingredients I assure you - slightly possessed, semi-industrial and intoxicating druid-rock with increasingly visceral noise and concrete influences. You can also clearly detect elements of the fierce art-rock of early Deus & Lungfish (two members of that particular cult stable reside on this record!) in the churning, tumbling repeato-rock and incantations of opener 'Children of the Skull Defects'. The creaky organ-led creep-a-thon at the end is totally great too! The only problem with this record is that in the name of Satan and all his mischievous imps & sprites they've opted to press side one in reverse on side two, playing outwards from the middle. Thanks guys, I'm sure I want to hear genuinely challenging, exciting music played backwards as some sort of evil prank. Why didn't you just get crude etchings of your cocks plastered on it instead? Of far more use and interest...Mike's just made me play it backwards, I'm off for a ciggie, I'm proper scared that slimy shadows are gonna start seeping out of the monitor at any moment...
• ‘2013 – 3012’ is a brand new LP vinyl only release that follows the ‘Peer Amid’ album and features The Skull Defekts joined by both Daniel Higgs and Zomes.
• The A side consists of three new songs while the B side is a reverse cut done on a Scully Lathe. The B side is not only a reverse recording of the A side but literally PLAYS BACKWARDS from the inside of the record to the outside.
• ‘2013 – 3012’ is limited to only 1,000 vinyl copies worldwide and includes a free download coupon. These are not expected to last long as the ‘Peer Amid’ vinyl sold out very quick earlier this year.
• These three new tracks were recorded during the band’s US tour in support of ‘Peer Amid’.
• The Skull Defekts are one of the centerpieces of Sweden’s experimental rock scene. Daniel Higgs is the lyricist and frontman of Lungfish and has a very extensive catalogue of solo material. Zomes is the solo work of Asa Osborne (Lungfish, The Pupils).
• “The Skull Defekts’ rhythmic, muscular, psychedelic use of drone, raga, ritualistic repetition, circularity, and noise works perfectly with Higgs’ Lungfish and solo trajectories” - Stereogum
