I think it was the word 'sad' that made me think this was going to be post-rock. Or maybe the word 'captains'. Anyway its nothing of the sort. The nearest comparison would be ace forgotten London popsters By the Fireside with their mix of krautey grooves and upbeat college rock but that may be too obscure a comparison even for our knowledgeble consumers so I'd say perm any from the following:- Thee More Shallows, Grandaddy and Pavement and you are getting somewhere close. Its nicely recorded in that mid-fi way - not too polished, plenty of rough edges left in but it fairly blasts out of the stereo. Plenty of decent tunes, Beck like vocals, thumping drums, strummy acoustics, a more raucous take on this weeks Atlas Sound album to the point that Phil has just wandered over to check. Its limited to 300 copies with extraordinary screen printed artwork featuring a postcard, tracing paper lyric sheet and other bits and bobs. An all round winner.
• ‘Fight Less, Win More’ was written in San Francisco and recorded in a barn in Cornwall. The combination of English folk and Sparklehorse- esque Americana is evident.
• It was mixed in Portland by Larry Crane (Cat Power, The Go-Betweens, Stephen Malkmus).
• The CD format of the album is available as a hand silk screen printed edition limited to 300 copies. It is a collaboration between artists Phil Goss, Nick Goss and Dan Davis.
