Another collaborative charity effort from electronic cathedral Warp records. It looks like a well worthwhile set up, recorded in Kinshasa with a selection of Congolese musicians. Ranging in style from heady Massive Attack meets King Midas Sound trip-hop melting into rustic soulful party funk taking in excursions into the world of cheeky flute-glazed breaks and delving later into warm, squiggly tribal rhythms or organic techno with spiritual incantations. Then there's some lovely pattering, organic Congolese folk bleeding into a sleepy, murky skank with flutes. It carries on in this seamless yet eclectic fashion for the rest of the collection. A most curious & intimate listen full of diverse, warm-hearted segments. Large portions will definitely appeal to fans of last years Congotronics related splurge, there's some truly homely, delightful moments on here. I'm not going to mention Damon Albran either (;0]), you don't need grinning Britpop mockneys to sell music this engaging & grassroots but there are also several other highly respected Western producers involved in the production of this lush set. Give Oxfam your money and get something exciting back in return, rather than some seashell & basil bath salts.
