Our single of the week (28th October 2011)
...according to our Mike on Fri 28 Oct, 2011.
I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Gruff Rhys and his adventures in psychedelic pop. At worst he's alright; at his best he's completely inspired. You'll be glad to hear that on this double-header he's most definitely in the latter territory. On the A side he duets with El Perro Del Mar in a stunning Serge Gainsbourg-esque lounge-pop number with a superb arrangement that's more than a little reminiscent of Jon Brion in all the best ways. Flip it and there's a long and psychedelic piece called Whale Trail which is totally charming. I can't figure out if it's been made in conjunction with an iPhone game or just been inspired by it, but it's brilliant. It goes through various movements, with wistful verses giving way to pumping choruses that owe a debt to old computer game soundtracks. Both of these songs are wonderful. Brilliant stuff from this consistent Welsh nutjob.
• Gruff Rhys proudly presents a new double A-side single in addition to a forthcoming headline UK tour.
• ‘Space Dust #2’ is a tale of short-lived, seminar- sparked romance in the form of a duet with El Perro Del Mar.
• The playful ‘Whale Trail’ sees Gruff declaring “this is a motivational song, let’s all get along” and has been inspired by the mobile phone game of the same name.

It has been made in conjunction with the iPhone game, which is rather good. It features the Whale Trail song and he is listed in the credits. Super
