This 7” is coming out in conjunction with the Roberts-compiled anthology of old traditional folk recordings on Drag City that's also out this week, with Roberts covering a traditional song on the A side and his buddy Drew Wright doing another on the flip. Roberts's offering is an airy and lighthearted duet with Karine Polwart which is most charming indeed (although in all honesty I preferred it when he played his own material a bit more), while on the B side Wright provides a more brooding number with the vocals accompanied by a constant drone. Both fine recordings.
• This split 7” record is being released in tandem with the compilation album ‘Whar The Pig Gaed On The Spree’.
• The A side of the single is Alasdair Roberts’ own arrangement and performance (with renowned Scottish singer Karine Polwart) of ‘Captain Wedderburn’s Courtship’, a traditional ballad included on ‘Whaur The Pig...’ from the mouth of an octogenarian farmer named Willie Mathieson.
• The flipside features another young and talented traditionally-minded Scots singer, Drew Wright, who turns in an interpretation of the classic Scots border ballad ‘The Dowie Dens O Yarrow’.
• The ‘Whaur The Pig Gaed On The Spree’ compilation commemorates the 60th anniversary of Alan Lomax’s first Scottish recordings and acknowledges their profound effect on the Scotland’s folk revival with Alasdair Roberts, one of its most gifted heirs at the wheel.
