DJ Kicks EP by Gold Panda

Gold Panda returns with his first new material since 2010's 'Lucky Shiner' impressed all the kids and made him a household name in dance music circles. Here GP is on playful form with 'An Iceberg Hurled Northward Through Clouds', a track that plays with some of the characteristics of Kieran Hebden's Four Tet work. It's all light handed percussion, chimes and bells and fluttering melodies backed by a sturdy bass beat you can get down to. It's what I would expect a Four Tet remix of Lucky Dragons to sound like. This is followed by a reworking of 'Through Clouds' that gets playful with the sample choices and a fantastic kalimba jam entitled '_Kalimba_Pedal_Improv_stem' that again hints at Lucky Dragons. It's a brief but excellent distraction. Flip it and we're treated to the Peaking Lights reworkings. Domino's new star signing hit us with vocal and instrumental versions of 'An Iceberg Hurled Northward Through Clouds' and both play on the strengths of Peaking Lights dub infused party moves. This isn't as spliffed out as I was expecting but the bonus bassline gets things going with the additional vocal acting more as a bonus synth texture rather than exerting a dominance over the track. Great 12”.

Gold Panda's new EP 'An Iceberg Hurled Northward Through Clouds' is his first full release of original material since October's stunning debut album, 'Lucky Shiner'. A track recorded especially for his DJ Kicks release, 'An Iceberg Hurled Northward Through Clouds' is the lead track from said compilation, and is a gorgeous, slow burning amalgam of woozy chimes, flooded bass and syncopated claps, it sounds like a step aside from the tracks on 'Lucky Shiner', perhaps a tad icily detached - as the the track title implies. Additional tracks include a self-reworking of the song, 'Through Clouds' by Derwin Panda, assisted by Simian Mobile Disco man Jas Shaw, and 'Kalimba_Pedal_Improv_stem', a short and playful track incorporating elements from the lead tune once again.

Peaking Lights are a husband a wife duo currently residing in Madison, Wisconsin. Their quietly-released album '936', a wonderful hazed out amalgaman of dub, psyche, reggae and everything inbetween set their world alight this year and is set for a full release through Domino Records later this year, and is sure to feature on all manner of critic's end-of-year lists. Their two versions of Gold Panda's lead track are swoonsomely atmospheric re-readings, one including Indra from Peaking Light's gorgeous vocals.
