Burnt Hills are like the band that you should listen to when proper high. They have earth rumbling riffs and a slight leaning toward space rock. I thought they would be more psychedelic than this. They don't mess around with floaty, style ambient nonsense, or delay or “flange” (huh huh...FLANGE!). They sort of hit you square in the balls with a chord progression and proceed to play it at you with great volume and anger. They remind me of Motorpsycho or summat in the way that they use the same sonic template... It's churning, droney and it's proper LOUD! It's a bit like a runaway train, is this short but sweet EP, it starts bludgeoning you to death with riffs and doesn't stop...not for no man. It's one-sided is this vinyl and the side which doesn't have music on it can be used as a complimentary snack tray or an elaborate yet partially unfunny sight gag (...”this new album from Burnt Hills sounds like nothing I've ever heard”...) for seconds of fun. Limited to 150 copies and a must have for bong rock lovers everywhere...
Burnt Hills are a collective from Albany, NY. Every monday they use to jam and host shows at the Heldberg basement, which is also the headquarter of Flipped Out Records, exquisite label and mailorder active for 25 years. If you are lucky enough to attend one of their shows, you will probably realize that you are experiencing something more than a concert… It’s in fact a proper ritual that finds its perfect expression in a music that combines the freedom of free jazz, the fire of garage rock and the hallucinations of the best psychedelic music. Lights Out is just Burnt Hills at their best. Just a little warm up and the Hills explode like a bomb blowing up continually in a furious jam, where heavy vibrating vocals, pulsating rythm section and wild guitar wipe outs move along with perfect cohesion and fluidity. We are completely sucked into the vortex of this groove when a slow comedown begins to the end of the side, with that great solo guitar pattern drawing the last beaufitul images and then… Lights Out!
