She's a bit wacky this lass. On the sleeve, a naked female torso with a tigers head. In a recent press shot she's drawn eyes on her breasts. Crazy!!!! On this, her debut 7” on Mute, she mixes a folky sensibility with hi-fidelity Radio 6-friendly production values with horns, violins and the like. It sort of rollicks along like a particularly sprightly train. I'm reminded of both Mumford and Sons and Patrick Wolf which kind of tells you where it's at though others have said Coldplay's 'Yellow' and Godley and Creme's 'Under Your Thumb' (actually that last one was me) just to confuse you completely. Her voice is so high I have a pack of dogs salivating behind me. On the flip it's lots more folk with banjos plucking away. Surely soon to be seen on the main stage at 'family friendly organic' festivals whilst bearded couples bop along with their bored toddlers. She'd better get those eye breasts put away then.
" Liliputt" introduces one of the most self-assured new artists of the year, a pop polymath whose blend of psychedelia, glam rock and chain gang folk is quite unlike anything else you’re likely to hear this year.
Having recorded the album without a record deal to ensure complete creative control, it will be released on Mute, the label described by Houghton as “The one that still believed in my record after everyone else had gone to the pub.” Now ready for release, Beth sees the album as “an animal I'm preparing to ride. Grooming it, feeding it, braiding its hair, and I feel that Ben Hillier (album producer) has built me a saddle that is both practical and comfortable to use.
