Mazzy Star seem to have picked the most perfect time to reform as there's a hell of a lot of bands in thrall to their hazy spell. The influences on this neat 7” are there for all to see, Dick Dale, Angelo Badalamenti, a bass line which is the exact melody of 'You Aint Seen Nothing Yet' and a guitar line stolen from the Tindersticks all beneath some woozy, dreamy lady vox. It's less easy to pick the influences on the flip with its odd glistening guitar melody yet the bass line recalls Peter Gabriel. These slabs of Beach House style dreampop are not original but they are very pleasant.
• Ahead of their much anticipated debut full length from Double Six / Domino, TTTs drop ‘You Wish You Were Red’, a lesson in pop song craft, taking its cues from influences as disparate as Dick Dale’s 50’s surf pop and Angelo Badalamenti’s lush moments on David Lynch soundtracks. Its sound is most assuredly the band’s own and streets apart from anything else.
• The cryptically titled ‘Engelhardt’s Arizona’ on the flip, meanwhile, pits circling guitar shreds against a moodily spacious backdrop decorated with swooning half sung, half whispered vocals, urging the track ever onwards and skywards, building to a miasmic, transcendent climax.
• Taken together, it’s both a great achievement and a potent introduction to the bracingly unpredictable, cinematic world of Trailer Trash Tracys, and just two of the many reasons to get excited about their upcoming debut album.
• Vinyl sleeve decorated with gold foil lettering and Kurt Ralske artwork. Limited to 750 copies.
