Got another fancy looking release from Attacknine records. It comes with a plethora of freebies including four pin badges and bonus downloads. The vinyl also comes in mixed colours so technically each copy is unique. Brian Grainger will be familiar to you by now but I'll be surprised if you've ever heard him writing straight-up guitar orientated pop, let alone heard the lad sing, which is exactly what he does on the first of the four tracks presented here. It's a blissful shoegazey effort, full of reverb-drenched guitars and crispy pre-programmed beats. His vocal is decent too, he should do it more often. The three additional numbers are fine ambient guitar workouts that sound fantastic to my ear. A great guitarist in my opinion. Orick is a joint effort between longtime friends and collaborators Nick Huntington (of Freescha, also on Attacknine) and John Borucki. These tracks are a precursor to a forthcoming LP on Attacknine that will inevitably be a spaced out and dreamy effort if opener 'Southern Son' is anything to go by. Flip and you get another dose of blissful finger-picked guitars and cosmic vocals of the like that will no doubt impress you Spiritualized/early Verve fans out there. Another killer package from Attacknine.
Brian Grainger started making music in 1997, and since then he's amassed a catalog of hundreds of releases on dozens of labels, under various names and using several varieties of sounds. He's written electronic music for video games, scored ambient drones for Animal Planet, played sad techno for Germans, and strummed sad guitars for Attacknine Records. In spite of all this, Brian has never put out a pop song with him singing on it, but thanks to Attacknine and Orick, he has now done that too.
Orick is the musical output of longtime friends and musical collaborators Nick Huntington (of Freescha) and John Borucki. This single is a precursor to their forthcoming album on Attacknine. Fans of Nick's work in Canyon Country and The Surf The Sundried may find a kinship here with Orick, echoing from the California coastline.
