Our single of the week (24th November 2011)
...according to our Li'l Biz on Thu 24 Nov, 2011.
Mugstar are a great band! Along side Bristol's The Heads and Manchester's Gnod they are the finest examples of Kraut-infused cosmic rock currently doing the rounds in the UK. When Agitated records pushed for a repress of the groups 'Lime' LP they also suggested the possibility of remixes with this one from Robert Hampson (Loop / Main) considered to be the most worthy of release. Hampson has taken 'Serra' and transformed it into a vast 40 minute super freakout! Split into two parts for the 12” (which incidentally is on immaculately cut green vinyl) and also available as one mega track on CD, 'Serra' is monolithic. The first part retains the classic Dinger beat from the original whilst banishing the rest of the arrangement to the outer limits of the cosmos! These are some daringly fizzy drones that wouldn't sound out of place on many a classic krautrock LP from the late 60's/early 70's. Essentially a Can influenced beast with the production qualities and free-form experimentation of Amon Duul thrown in for good measure. I wonder what happens if you flip it? Well it sorta subsides a little, the drums making way for layers of un-nerving, almost shamanic drones in the early Tangerine Dream mould. Sounds surprisingly like Vibracathedral Orchestra in parts mainly due to it's unsettling and ghostly choral drones. Lovely stuff. Ltd to 800 units.
