Bad Penny by Spectrals

It seems like only a few seconds ago I was reviewing the new Spectrals single 'Get A Grip' and chuckling away to myself watching Louis strumming his guitar in various Yorkshire countryside locations. Gotta love those Spectrals vids. So, 'L' returns with his debut album for real. Recorded at Hall Place with Richard Formby (Spectrum, Dakota Suite, Triumph 2000), 'Bad Penny' is a labour of love with Louis playing pretty much everything on album aside from the drums, which are left in the capable hands of his brother Will Jones. For the uninitiated Spectrals specialise in forging new indie pop sounds from the remnants of Soul, R&B, Doo-Wop, Pop and Garage Rock with Louis's Yorkshire drawl differentiating it from the acts taking a similar stylistic approach in the US. Louis certainly has a knack for writing a decent pop song as is evident on 'Big Baby', 'You Can't Live On Love Alone', 'Confetti' and single 'Get A Grip' and his balladeering is pretty spot on too. Noticing a hint of The Style Council's yacht rock style creeping in which I kinda like and Morrissey is definitely ever present, which is no bad thing. Really enjoying the laid back vibe here and Louis's songwriting has come on in leaps and bounds. Plenty of variety and great use of instrumentation. A strong debut for sure.

•    Bad Penny is the debut album from Spectrals, aka 21 year old Louis Jones.

•    Mixing ingredients of pop, soul, doo wop, and a garage rock ballad, it sounds vintage but current, while the Yorkshire lilt in his voice (a result of his hometown, Heckmondwike) places him firmly in the UK, rather than Detroit.

• Produced by Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Hood, Telescopes, Spectrum).

•    The band is touring with Real Estate (Domino Records) again this Autumn and has previously played with Best Coast, Les Savy Fav, Girls, Wavves, Ducktails, Woods, Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Smith Westerns, Happy Birthday, Ariel Pink and Avi Buffalo.

•    Limited digipack CD packaging with 12 page booklet. •    Vinyl LP is 180g vinyl and includes digital download code.
