Joakim - Find a Way

Find a Way by Joakim

‘Find A Way’ is, was and will always be the first song that Joakim started on his ‘Nothing Gold’ album sessions; the spring of the albums seasons, if you will. But, in the good old tradition of ‘Art imitates life, life imitates art’ the purpose of the track became lost and was subsequently scrapped. It was not until Joakim had realized a concept for his third studio album, built the entire album around it and completed all recordings and mixes, that the lyrics for ‘Find A Way’ came to him, breathing life back into the song, and finding it’s way back onto the album that it originally launched.

Tiga : "Find A Way" reminds me of Thompson Twins. You said you never heard them. are you lying?” I'm not. Although I've been listening to a lot of music I'm happy that there's always big gaps in my musical culture, like those Thompson Twins. Thanks for the tip.

Arguably one of the most catchy songs on the Album ‘Find A Way' still manages to be sophisticated, a theme that Etienne Jaumet (Zombie Zombie) wanted to explore in his questioning to Joakim for the album PR: “The production and arrangements on your record reach a certain level of sophistication and shows a deep knowledge of music, something rare in « Pop Music » in France, which sometimes makes me think of Steely Dan... Do you think your music is aimed at some kind of music elite? No, I don't believe making sophisticated music means it's aimed at sophisticated people. My goal has always been to reach people, as much people as possible, to make music that has something universal.

You mention Steely Dan, which is a good example of that, their music, or at least their production is highly sophisticated, but it never sound complicated and it was a huge mainstream success. Same with some of David Bowie's records, Talking Heads, or even Radiohead these days although I’m not a huge fan. I'm not in love, by 10CC is a crazy avant-garde experiment, on a studio production point of view. Superman by Laurie Anderson hit the billboard charts in the US. That's the kind of music I want to do.

Replete with remixes from Soulclap, possibly the most in-demand and hottest remix team around today, up-and-coming cosmic disco/house stalwart John Talabot, Marble/Sound Pellegrino's cousin Das Glow with his mad futuristic techno, and finally Australia’s finest export since Peter Weir, Punks Jump Up with a bouncy-steel-drummy afro disco take. Making for a dynamic remix package, that represents the idea that a piece of music can be both sophisticated and fun. In this sense ‘Find A Way’ joins a tradition of Joakim songs such as ‘Are You Vegatarian’ that are often designed to be the comic relief in an album but go on the be the timeless classics that DJ, Music Lovers and Artist find their way back to time and time again.
