Christmas has come a little early for Arthur Russell enthusiasts with this dazzling deluxe 4LP set in a hand silk-screened box printed in red and metallic silver inks. The set expands 1981's '24-->24' album to include remixes and rare versions, while the third and fourth discs collect additional tracks for the artists own Sleeping Bag label (which also released classics from the likes of EPMD, Joyce Sims, Mantronix etc.) which were released under various pseudonyms and collaborations: Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS 126 Brooklyn, and Indian Ocean. The set showcase's hugely influential tracks that were spun by the likes of Larry Levan at the legendary Paradise Garage. Russell's innovative disco productions are often shadowed by his later productions, but those in the know are fully aware of the impact these tunes have had on contemporary dance music. Tracks like 'Go Bang!' have been sampled numerous times and was hugely influential on early House producers. The Todd Terry Project's 'Bango (To The Bat Mobile)' from 1988 is just one example. Hailed as a house classic, I'm fairly sure a lot of people that adore the record are probably not aware Terry was sampling Russell's stuff. The Latin funk rhythms and thick bass grooves are still as infectious today as I'm sure they were when they were first created. I dare you to find a better snapshot of seminal underground US disco that absorbs and re-contextualises the vibrant multicultural influences of New York city. Comes with linear notes by Russells biographer, unpublished photographs, original artwork etc. Oh and Walter Gibbon's rare remix of 'Go Bang! is in there too. I doubt this will hang around for too long.
Though classically trained, Arthur Russell’s major contributions to the music world is in the dance genre. Despite the fact that his pioneering work in the late ‘70s and on through the ‘80s was only quietly acknowledged at the time, his long-term impact is best described as formidable. Russell died in 1992, but his art lives on and his influence is still felt in the world of dance music and beyond. His innovative, leftfield dance records flew way ahead of what people were used to hearing at the time, due in part to his involvement in New York’s downtown avant-garde music scene. He scored several hits at clubs like The Paradise Garage (Larry Levan was a huge supporter) and his biggest tunes, ‘Go Bang!’ and ‘Is It All Over My Face?’ are worldwide hits and still played to this day. His seminal work, the full length ‘24-->24 Music’ album, has now been expanded to a deluxe 4LP set in a hand silk-screened box. In addition to the music found on the original issue of the album, this collection includes rare 12” remixes and edits, such as the highly coveted Walter Gibbons mix of ‘Go Bang!’ and the infamously rare ‘You Can’t Hold Me Down’ (Test Pressing Version). Records 3 and 4 round out the rest of Russell’s audio credits with the Sleeping Bag label, with alias and collaborative tracks from Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS 126 Brooklyn, and Indian Ocean. The four LPs are housed inside beautiful one of a kind, hand pulled screen printed sleeves that tuck into the extra durable, matching screen printed box, in red and metallic silver ink. Also included is an oversized 20 page booklet featuring unreleased photos by Janette Beckman, text by Russell biographer Tim Lawrence, testimonials by some of the greats in the field, vintage artwork and other content. Needless to say, this limited edition set will only see a single production run, and is sure to be in high demand.
