Far-Out Fangtooth - Pure & Disinterested

Ah, Siltbreeze. You can always rely on them to deal out something authentically filthy-sounding. This is probably about as summery as records from this label come but there's still a dense shroud of guitar fuzz over everything. In fact this is a totally great garage rock record, kind of an update on the early Sonic Youth sophisticated neanderthal vibe. In fact basically the similarities are so glaring that I'd have to say that if you like early Sonic Youth and want more records that sound like that, this is pretty essential, and they come across a whole lot more authentic and enjoyable than the vast majority of the SY pretenders I've heard in my time. There's touches of the Velvets when they go quieter too...but then the same can be said of the 'Yoof, right? The songs here are consistently well written and the whole record is totally listenable. Washington DC's Pregnant put out a brilliant self-titled album a year or two ago that sounded like a load of unheard outtakes from the first Foo Fighters album sessions. This album kinda does the same for Bad Moon Rising, so similar is the tone palette. But it's still ace.

Existing in the musty shadows of the Philly scene, Far-Out Fangtooth have built a most unique foundation of sound, mixing early Cramps swamp / garage blackout, nascent Bauhaus post-punk / quasi-goth bleakness as well as an uncanny nod to the witchy, ethereal leather glam of firstgeneration Blue Öyster Cult. Their debut LP, Pure & Disinterested, follows a limited- edition 7-inch for local label Ian! Records. In recent months, Far-Out Fangtooth has seen live action on bills with the likes of Times New Viking, Circle Pit, Blank Dogs and R. Stevie Moore. The band intends to launch a fullscale US tour to coincide with the release of Pure & Disinterested, so keep your eyes (and ears) peeled. Limited to 500 copies; features free download card.
