Dead In The Dirt - Fear

Fear by Dead In The Dirt

Ever since Phil realised I'm secretly punk he's been giving me all the most brutal stuff that comes in to review. This time round it's a ten-song 33rpm 7” from Atlanta, Georgia's Dead in the Dirt. Given its length I thought it was going to be a straight powerviolence record but it's actually pretty varied. Everything flashes by a bit quickly to really take it in in this noisy office. It's much more on the old-school hardcore meets new-school metalcore tip than the grindcore stylings I was expecting. Even gets a little bit doomy in places, and there's some total beatdown riffs. These guys like to mix it up. As you'd expect on Southern Lord the production is meaty and the band is tight. Nice looking coloured vinyl and pro-printed inserts, too.

* Dead in the Dirt is a savage fucking wrecking crew bursting out of Atlanta, Georgia.

* It is not very often that a new band can simultaneously and effectively spew forth such filthy chaos in a controlled manner.  It is also rare that recordings from bands in this scene/genre display such clear and concise production values.  This is literally one of the heaviest and most brutal recordings that has come out in recent times!

* Points of reference here would be the discordant heaviness of His Hero is Gone, the urgency of Cursed, the speed of Drop Dead and the black/darkness of Craft or Deathspell Omega.
