Cloaks - Versions Grain

Versions Grain by Cloaks

Great to see this label back in action after their old distro took a shit as they say. I got this promo sent to me at home from our office with a post it attached which read “Metal dubstep - Bit oppressive”. It tickled me that one did. Now some of you may recall that I was well into the 'Versus Grain' album so an album of remixes was met with a keen sense of anticipation. The set opens with the thunderous, heavyweight 'Detritus Version' which comes like Scorn turned up to 11 with both feet on the distortion pedal. Legion Of Two remake 'Against' adding live drums (something which Scorn did recently too). Then Justin Broadrick showcases his JK Flesh pseudonym (a record forthcoming on 3by3) with a mix that's both aggressive and ethereal with big spooked atmospherics and tough rhythms, just as I'm getting into it a big chugging metal riff enters the mix which to be honest is not for me. Then on to 'R.F.I.D.' which gets remix action from Ancient Methods who I just fucking love. Their brand of banging, dark industrial techno has leaked into the original, creating a pounding slammer which really properly comes together after seven minutes. Stick around to hear it grow. 'Sixmenace One' is a brooder with crackles and hisses underpinning a warped malfunctioning monster distorted robotic bass sound. Oyaarss remoulds 'Sixmenace Two' into a gargantuan monster distorto-cunch-fest which is equally pummeling as it is beautiful with its semi-classical melodic flourishes. Dead Fader tackle '#00148' (I can never remember the bloody keyboard shortcut on a Mac for the # symbol so I had to google and copy and paste that). Anyway this mix sounds suitably evil, as does the Devilman mix of 'Against' which is like your fave DJ Trace or Ed Rush & Optical 12” slowed down to 33rpm with added synth stabs and '80s electro tumbling drum rolls. Finally Volt Music turn in their version of 'R.F.I.D' which is a high tempo distorted and filtered to hell high octane adrenalin Tekno rush. I can imagine this one tearing people's K-holed faces off at some squat party. You've probably not heard of many of the artists mentioned so keep your eyes peeled as this is a taster for the label's forthcoming activities.

* The 3by3 label returns from a long hiatus with a new distribution partner and renewed vigour to unveil its most anticipated release to date, ‘Versions Grain’ – remixes and versions of tracks from Cloaks’ 2009 debut album ‘Versus Grain’, where the label began.

* Nine heavyweight industrial workouts featuring contributions from guest remixers Ancient Methods and Legion Of Two, alongside the entire 3by3 roster – JK Flesh (aka Justin Broadrick of Godflesh and Jesu), Dead Fader, Devilman, Oyaarss and Volt Music.
The inimitable Ancient Methods emerge for the first time on CD, providing a 9-minute slab of industrial Techno bass weight to get folks dancing like they mean it.
Planet Mu’s Legion Of Two make their first appearance since their 2009 album ‘Riffs’, adding their distinctive sound of live drums and tough electronics.
New 3by3 signing JK Flesh gets his first label outing. Yet another project from the insanely prolific Justin
Broadrick (Godflesh/Jesu/Palesketcher), providing just a taste of what to expect from the forthcoming album.
Dead Fader return to home listening format following their 2010 debut album ‘Corrupt My Examiner’ and a
succession of international live shows.
Latvian producer Oyaarss puts his unique spin on ‘Sixmenace Two’, promising a lot from his debut full-length, due on 3by3 later this year.
Also opening their 3by3 account is Devilman, featuring Shige Ishihara (DJ Scotch Egg/Seefeel) and Gorgonn (Dokkebi Q), finally making their release debut.
Carl Cloaks’ solo project Volt Music also gets a first airing and Cloaks offer up two alternative cuts that didn’t make the album.

* A killer remix package in its own right but also an excellent step forward for the 3by3 label, providing an indication of things to come from its roster over the next 18 months.
