Apparently this lad has been sending the blogosphere into a frenzy for a while. Once again I actually fail to hear how? I mean, I bloody hate shit like Washed Out, never a more appropriate name in showbusiness though looking at his popularity I am obviously clueless! YL is actually called Trevor though. How do people called Trevor actually make it past the first gate in this business? His skippy home-made beats are disarmingly simple, almost to the point of being retarded, the melodies minimal & twinkly and his vocals either a brittle falsetto or a muffled haze. That's all you slags want innit, someone young & tender to make plodding anthems? Well this record is full of plodding anthems which are somehow rescued from the pit of hopelessness by their sweet lo-fi charm & child-like naivete. I think it's the easy-going dreamy nature of these tunes that will ensure their popularity. I like the first half of '17' the best, where it's just built from his curious wonky angel's voice & some sort of appealing atmosphere instead of his annoying drippy dull-wave kindergarten music that is only plausible due to the murky production techniques. If these songs were recorded in a full studio there'd be naught there I tell thee. I'm sorry, I'm feeling a little cruel today but only because I've got a Nightingales tour EP waiting in the wings and this is holding me up......
* PITCHFORK: “Trevor Powers, the 22-year-old Boise, Idaho native who records as Youth Lagoon, came to prominence very quickly after posting his world-swallowing single "July" as a free Bandcamp download a few months ago. The song absolutely does not sound like the work of a single unseasoned young man. It's a massive track, confident and sure-footed in its build from organ-hum to shouting-down-mountains chorus.”
* Youth Lagoon, has had a long year. Not because he’s been endlessly touring or pursuing some wild dream, but because of life – the life of a kid going to college, being in love, dealing with heartache, and just living. “Youth Lagoon isn’t me,” says Powers, “It’s merely a part of me. I was in and out of different bands in high school and always tried to define myself by what music I played. I tried to find a sense of meaning by being in a band. But it wasn’t until this last year – when I realized I was more than just music – that I was able to create music that means something to me. And that is Youth Lagoon.” * Throughou the course of 2010, Powers began to write an album about things he had a hard time talking about. He claims that when he tries to talk about it to people, he doesn’t make sense. So he wrote an album about it entitled The Year of Hibernation. “For my whole life I’ve dealt with extreme anxiety.” says Powers. “Not anxiety about passing a test or somewhat normal things, but weird.. bizarre things. Things that only I know. I sometimes feel like I’m literally being eaten up inside. So I started writing these songs. Not just songs about my anxiety, but about my past and my present. Songs about memories, and all those feelings that those bring. I know that if I can be honest about what is inside my mind, there will be others that will be able to relate to it.”
* Although his music seems somewhat dreamy with the first listen, the lyrics show a different side to the matter. Hidden beneath the melodies is a voice that is eerie yet nostalgic. Powers claims his music is like letting people read his journal. “I don’t think I could ever write a completely happy album. It’s not that I’m not a happy person,” claims Powers, “but I just have too many things in my mind that haunt me.” * LP comes with 7” containing two brand new Youth Lagoon Tracks
