Christmas comes but most of the year. Here it is already like a train hurtling towards you down a darkened tunnel - tinsel, baubles, photocopier 'incidents' at work. And of course the record industry responds as it has done for the last few years not with gems from chart toppers like Wham's unsurpassable 'Last Christmas' but a host of middling indie stars attempting to re-create the blueprint of Low's perma-selling 'Christmas EP' with hopes to rake it in each year Holder-like. First off the block are She and Him with an old fashioned romp through the great and the good of Christmas past. All the classics are there again - 'Rocking around the Christmas Tree' (more mournful than the Mel Smith and Kim Wilde version), 'Baby It's Cold Outside', 'Blue Christmas', etc, etc, etc. It's in your Cowboy Junkies, stripped back reverbed guitar and haunting lady vocals conveyor belt and will probably sound beautiful on Christmas eve in front of an open fire when snow is glistening down the back lane but in October it sounds a little macabre.

A Very She & Him Christmas is a wonderful collection of festive tunes from two of music’s
most impressive artists – Zooey Deschanel (She) & M. Ward (Him). Inspired by seminal
seasonal albums by the likes of The Carpenters, Vince Guaraldi, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley
and more, She & Him have set out to create an intimate recording of Christmas classics that
help bring new emotions out of old songs. Recorded in Los Angeles and NYC at various points
in 2011, A Very She & Him Christmas sees the duo stepping back slightly from the layered,
lush aesthetic of their critically acclaimed second album, Volume Two. On A Very She & Him
Christmas, Deschanel and Ward let the songs speak for themselves, often recording them with
just acoustic guitar and vocals. Consistent in everything are the elements that have made She &
Him one of the most loved bands of the last few years – Deschanel’s soulful vocal delivery and
Ward’s impressive guitar work, both sounding as timeless as ever.
