Cover Girl are Captured Tracks newest signing and are a super-group of sorts, featuring members of Peepholes, Wetdog and Trash Kit. 'Paris Burns' sits somewhere between early Cure singles like 'Killing An Arab', early Joy Division (before they started playing triple slow) and, perhaps, very early four-track Hood. You can hear the anguish in the vocalists tortured wails yet this lacks the 'punky snarl' hinted at in the press release. Flip it and we are greeted with band chuckles which kinda diffuses the overtly earnest nature of the A-side. From there they pick things up a little with 'Que Sera' which I'd say was the best of the bunch with it's classic post-punk bass line melody and slowly evolving guitar crescendo. They finish with 'Chemicals', another classic blast of moody post-punk featuring familiar yet enjoyable tom heavy beats, ghostly vocal chants and minimalist guitar/bass melodies. It's a tried and tested path well executed.
Brand new 7" action from Captured Tracks, "Covergirl, the newest signee to the totally-on-fire label Captured Tracks, has members from U.K. DIY bands Peepholes, Wetdog and Trash Kit, and its sound is gloriously murky. For all those who complain about a lack of bite in rock music, Covergirl is a return to punky snarl on its first single "Paris Burns." The track mixes tornado noise, loft-tribal drums, atonal guitar twang and the type of attitude-laden vocals that make you want to knock over a street sign just to see if you can do it." Three tracks, all hits....
