Exitmusic - From Silence

From Silence by Exitmusic

4...according to our on Fri 30 Sep, 2011.

I'm not entirely sure about these two. There's a real resonance & dusky beauty about the arrangements which fall somewhere between Beach House and late-period Mercury Rev but also come imbued with a deep sense of chiming claustrophobia, that whole NY bleakness/beauty. See I really like them, i'm just unsure about them. I cannot decide whether to laugh out loud or shout hostile things at my stereo when she starts warbling like some possessed Irish nutcase on 'The Modern Age', probably the weakest, most obvious track here but still one to wave your lighter around to. 'The Hours' is an elegant, moving thing indeed, her voice changing timbre to a far more lustrous purr rather than the dense android wail that sounds like some tormented Scandinavian she-male on bad steroids. These guys get good marks from me because they've got a sense of drama & mystery to their particular brand of pretentiousness and if you're willing to listen with an open mind you realise there's some damn nice textures & moods within these slow, tragic songs. So Beach House on Big Apple downers then, how d' ya like them eggs?

• The debut EP from New York City’s Exitmusic (Aleksa Palladino and Devon Church).

• Both chillingly beautiful and melodic, whilst creepily sparse and disembodied. Ethereal dark pop similar to Beach House, Sigur Ros and Portishead.

•    This EP will be released exclusively to independent stores only in advance of a full release in November.

• Aleksa also has a recurring role in the Martin Scorsese produced HBO series ‘Boardwalk Empire’.
