The relationship between Norman Records and Boomkat is a little like that between Leeds United and Manchester United. Strange inter-city rivals, one a massive international conglomerate and one a bunch of chancers from Manchester (joke!) or also see the relationship between the Father Ted household and that of Father Dick Burn. Actually, is anyone still listening? Nope. Thought not. What I was going to say is that according to sources this record was Boomkat's album of the week last week, not that I spend any time on their sleek website of course you understand. This is another one of those records that fits in perfectly with what we've begun to know as chill wave or hypnagogic (I can't even spell the word). One part Zola Jesus, one part How to Dress Well and one part the intro music for when Prince is about to come onto the stage. Murky slowed down beats, dreamy vocals, Cocteau Twins like snare drums, atmospherics that recall Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away'. Yes, a lot of people are doing this type of thing but this is a lovely female take on it and on tracks like 'Casual Diamond' they let it all hang out with fabbo distorted vocals and looped guitars. If (like me) the new Zola Jesus one has lost a bit of edge then you could do worse than give this a go.
Debut LP from Austin-based Stefanie Franciotti - “Stefanie Francinotti's vocals are enchantingly spectral, shrouded in dusty attic echo and floating to climactic heights in "Romantic Streams"' second half, and glows warmly in the spidery bed of synthesizers and vintage drum machine crash.” - ALTERED ZONES. Heavy weight LP
